Of all the things to forget to blog about, my birthday is the least that I should have forgotten.
Last October 18, 2008 (the day before we left for Davao to compete for the 10th National Debate Championship), I turned 20. Yes, folks I am twenty and I know that I sound too immature for my age and I know it's hard to believe because my graying hair doesn't do justice to my number of years in adding problems into this chaotic world.
I woke up, nay, I was woken up at around 4 A.M. (or was it 5?) by the sound of a strumming guitar accompanying indistinct voices of (no, not angels) what at first seemed like people you'd like to throw boiling water at for disturbing your sleep. And I was glad I never did that because when I walked over to my bedroom door to see who owned those voices that struggled to sing songs like Time After Time, You Love, and a few others but I can't remember their titles now (wow, I really am getting old), I was surprised to see the familiar faces of my primary friends serenading me (it's a Filipino custom called manyanita - people serenading you at the dawn of your birthday).
I never knew about the manyanita plan. I was surprised but mostly, I was caught in disbelief! I never thought they'd be able to pull off something like this: waking up really early (and to think that most of us are late comers at school), bring a guitar (you can imagine how much hassle it would give them), travel 30 minutes away from the city (the poise-losing trip to my place because of the lengthy drive) just to get to my house and sing songs -- high-pitched songs. I've underestimated them. That was mean of me. My primary friends have really outdone themselves. And I felt loved (even sorry for doubting them). I never really thought they'd be able to surprise me on my birthday. It's just so out of their character. But there they were, all smiles and baggy-eyed (they slept really late because they were up most of the night practicing...poor things!). And my mom, who knew about this, whom I had a fight with the day before, was all smiles (as if today was our day of truce...and even until I got back from Davao, we never have been bitter...yet) with them.
They stayed at home with me until 3 in the afternoon. We had our usual videoke sessions and had a great time. When the night came, they picked me up at my house with Raffy's car and off to Club Zinc we went. And there, we danced the night away. Dancing at my 20th. Hoping that I will never have to stop having fun again. Wishing that every year from here-on now will still be a year of youth and wonders...but of course, that's never really gonna happen for me. Still I hold on to that birthday wish like a person clinging on for dear life so as not to fall on that deep dark edifice that seemed like a bottomless pit (carpe diem, how exactly should I exercise that?).
But there's one thing I've learned on my being 20. It's the point that people really do have a way of surprising you jsut when you thought you've already figured them all out. Happy 20th birthday to me. ^_^
